A Trip Without naviflash:

In the old days, people would rely on their road atlases and street maps to somehow get from A to B. Nowadays there’s route planners in the internet which will work your route out for you – you just make a couple of printouts and set off. For this reason, quite a few motorists ask themselves the question: ‘why do I actually need a navigation system?

Yet the problems often start as soon as you get on the motorway – where you expect them to crop up the least. A tailback is suddenly announced on the radio 20 km further along the carriageway. There’s an exit approaching. ‘Shall I turn off or not? How long is the diversion? Will it be worth it?’ Things start getting hectic as the person in the passenger seat reaches for the map and tries to find the right page; things get dangerous when the driver joins in. In the last minute, swinging across the carriageway from right to left, you finally make the turn-off.

After three wrong turnings and a 50 km detour, you finally reach the town you were looking for. Even if you’ve printed some maps out they probably aren’t any use, as you’ve driven in from the other side. Then there’s a set of road works, a diversion to the right, rush hour traffic and not a signpost in sight. The result: dangerous manoeuvres to get into the right lane, and speeding to make your appointment followed by getting caught by a speed camera. What a disaster!
