Map Matching

Map Matching refers to a procedure which compares the measured position of an object in a particular location with the information about the location on a digital map.

In vehicle navigation systems, the position of the vehicle is usually measured with support of the American satellite navigation system, GPS. With GPS, the accuracy of the measured and actual position is stated as being within 15 meters. The digital maps are also able to boast margins which are within a matter of meters. For the navigation device itself, the position of the vehicle in the digital map has to be determined, so that an accurate route calculation can be made from the current location to the destination.
